$15+tax /person for everyone 5 and older
Admission includes all activities and the covered wagon ride. Our admission is not a daily fee. If you'll be in the area more than one day, please let us know as your admission would be valid more than one day.
Admission does not need to be purchased in advance nor do activities need to be scheduled in advance.
We are a seasonal business with hours varying throughout the year. You can contact us to year-round to make camping reservations, place orders, or request further information
May 25 - September 2
Daily 9AM - 7PM
Activities are offered from 10AM - 6PM
The first covered wagon ride leaves around 10AM and the last one leaves at 6PM with rides leaving throughout the day. We are open seven days a week throughout the summer, including Sundays and Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day.
September 3 - September 30
Daily 9AM - 5PM
Activities are offered from 11AM - 2PM
October 1 - October 31
Daily 9AM - 5PM, weather permitting
No activities offered, but the grounds, visitors center, and gift shop are open.
The grounds are closed for the winter, but we are still in the office. If you would like to make a camping reservation, request information, or place a phone order, please don't hesitate to contact us via phone or email.
Beginning the last week of April - May 21, 2002
Monday - Friday, Hours vary daily as we host school field trips. It is best to contact us for details. During our Spring season we are not open on the weekends and also will be closed on Friday, May 22, 2020.
Location and Directions:
From De Smet
Drive one half mile southeast on Highway 14 turn right onto Homestead Road and go south for just over half a mile. Our Visitors Center is located at the top of the hill.
From Minneapolis and St. Paul
Travel southwest on US Hwy 169 to US Hwy 14. Go west on US Hwy 14. Stop and visit Walnut Grove, MN. Continue west on US Hwy 14 for 100 miles. Watch for signs just before reaching De Smet. De Smet is a perfect place to spend a night on the way to Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills.
From Chicago and Milwaukee
Coming from the east, drive west on Interstate 90. In South Dakota, exit Interstate 90 onto Interstate 29 North towards Brookings, SD. Travel north until Exit 133. Travel west on US Hwy 14 for just over 40 miles. Watch for signs just before reaching De Smet.
From Omaha, Sioux City, Sioux Falls
Coming from the south, drive north on Interstate 29 in South Dakota until Exit 133. Travel west on US Hwy 14 for just over 40 miles. Watch for signs just before reaching De Smet.
From Fargo, Grand Forks
Coming from the north, drive south on Interstate 29 in South Dakota until Exit 133. Travel west on US Hwy 14 for just over 40 miles. Watch for signs just before reaching De Smet.
From Rapid City, Mount Rushmore, and Badlands
Coming from the west, drive east on Interstate 90. At Mitchell, SD take Exit 330, follow SD Hwy 37 north to SD Hwy 34. Head east on SD Hwy 34 to SD Hwy 25. Head north on SD Hwy 25. Watch for signs just before reaching De Smet.
