There is more to see and do in De Smet beyond the Ingalls Homestead. Even though we are a small town, we have restaurants and motels. Each section below provides useful information for planning your visit.
Other Places to Visit In De Smet
Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society
Our friends at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society offer an excellent, guided tour through two homes the Ingalls family lived in - the Surveyor's House from By the Shores of Silver Lake and the house Pa built on Third Street – as well as De Smet's first school. They also offer an exhibit of Ingalls family artifacts and activities in their Discovery Center.
They are open year-round, but it's a good idea to contact them if you are visiting October - May. They usually recommend at least 2 hours for your visit.
The Loftus Store
The Loftus Store still stands on our main street, Calumet Avenue. Laura wrote about Mr. Loftus and his store in her Little House books. In addition to seeing the original building, they offer a nice selection of De Smet and Little House gift. It is free to visit.
The Depot Museum
The De Smet Depot Museum is open Monday-Friday June, July, and August and includes artifacts and information about De Smet's history. It is located at 102 1st St SW. It is free to visit.
Wilder Welcome Center & Prairie Bus Tour
After years of giving visitors information and directions to sites from the books out of town, we at the Ingalls Homestead decided to start a bus tour. You can find us in town at the Wilder Welcome Center (the old Buchle Drug store) on the corner of Calumet Avenue and 2nd Street. You can find out more information about our bus tour here or feel free to contact us with any questions.
